Leadership Spotlight: An Interview with Dan Schiller, Portfolio President at Perseus

Selling doesn’t mean the story is over. At Constellation, owners have the opportunity to stay involved and see their vision evolve.

In our latest Leadership Spotlight, we sit down with Dan Schiller, who leads the healthcare portfolio, Miram Health, at Perseus Group. Dan shares his journey, passion for healthcare technology, and the unique value Perseus brings to acquisitions.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your portfolio?

My name is Dan Schiller, and I manage Miram Health, the healthcare portfolio at Perseus Group. I joined Perseus in 2012 through an acquisition of a company called Salar. I ran that company as General Manager for 6 years. After that I left Constellation to get back to my startup roots locally in Baltimore. The grass wasn’t greener, and I came back to Perseus to help build the newly acquired Dialysis businesses. I assisted the group as VP operations for 4 years and during that time integrated 5 businesses. In 2023 I took over as Portfolio Manager.

What is it about healthcare that continues to draw you in?

Healthcare is a fascinating field, especially as a software engineer. There’s a unique satisfaction in solving complex technical challenges while also making a meaningful difference. Data and technology in healthcare are critical—not only for advancing care but also for improving the human condition. We’re working on solutions that literally save lives, which is something I’m deeply passionate about.

What future direction are you considering for your portfolio?

We’re looking to expand beyond dialysis clinics, where we currently have a strong focus on end-stage renal care. Our aim is to leverage our experience to support other clinic-based healthcare sectors as well. Most recently we acquired Matrix, a market leading provider of clinical laboratory information systems for the Brazilian healthcare sector.

What makes Perseus Group a unique choice for business owners looking to sell?

One of Perseus’ unique advantages is that exiting doesn’t mean leaving your business behind. Many of our leaders, myself included, joined through acquisitions and continue to grow with us. Perseus offers business owners a permanent investment approach, providing a “long runway” to further develop their company, team, and vision. The story doesn’t end with us—it’s just the beginning of a new chapter.

Can you share an example of how an acquired company has grown post-acquisition?

We’ve acquired several companies facing challenges—struggling with customer service, support queues, or implementation backlogs. By prioritizing support and investing in resources, we’ve helped these companies turn around and thrive. For example, one company we acquired, had great customers and great software, but was struggling with its project backlog so much that it stalled the entire operation. We applied our best practices and now it’s profitable and a country’s whole health system relies on them.

How does Perseus support the growth of businesses in its portfolio?

Most companies that we acquire believe that their growth is in the hands of the next customer they’ll sign, or the next new product innovation they build. We follow core principles that ensure success in support, software delivery, and innovation. Often, pre-acquisition companies face barriers bringing their best ideas to market. With Perseus’ resources and best practices—built from years of experience across many companies—we help them achieve things they may have thought were impossible.

How does Perseus ensure a business’ legacy is maintained post-acquisition?

We prioritize people—first employees, then customers. We make sure that we understand and honor the legacy of the business, as it’s expressed through those who know it best. From there, we focus on expanding and growing the company while preserving its core values.

What advice would you give an owner who’s thinking about selling?

Selling doesn’t mean the story is over. At Constellation, owners have the opportunity to stay involved and see their vision evolve. 74% of managers within Perseus Group, including me, came through acquisitions, and it’s a testament to the rewarding environment here.

What do you wish you knew 10 years ago?

I’ve learned that the qualities of humility, urgency, and precision are essential for success—and they must go hand in hand. You can’t be urgent and precise without humility, or vice versa. I didn’t appreciate the balance of these qualities as much 10 years ago, but it’s a lesson that has been integral to my growth.

Lastly, what do you want people to know about Perseus?

Perseus is a family—a true team. After 12 years, I can confidently say these are the smartest, most dedicated, and genuinely enjoyable people I’ve worked with.
